Greetings everyone,
This is a reminder and invitation to the Myth Salon with John Bucher this Thursday April 30 at 5PM (PT).
It is ironic that the more we separate ourselves from one another, the pull towards community grows stronger. Solitude is wonderful – but it only goes so far in nurturing the soul! Particularly during the coronavirus pandemic, Will and I have endeavored to strengthen the awareness of mythology and its contemporary relevance to the broader sense of community by increasing the Myth Salon to a bi-weekly online gathering that stimulates connectivity, scholarship and affiliation. We also now have a panel of mythologists surrounding the featured speaker. The sense of community has never been more important to all of us – for we are witnessing one norm after the next slipping into history as rituals and customs that once defined us must be relinquished in order to find the path forward. Whether one’s life is centered in the arts, education, or business, each of us lives in the cultural community of which we are all members. Even if we have been shut down locally and are challenged every time we leave home, the geographic reach of the Myth Salon through the internet has expanded – reinforcing the notion that community is truly a web of relations that breathes life into itself.
One of the few silver linings of the coronavirus pandemic is the seemingly endless availability of excellent mythologists who – like the rest of us – are sentenced to their homes for the duration of this period of prolonged liminality. Now, both here and elsewhere, we can reach across time zones to connect with people through the Myth Salon – both to attend and present. Today, I could not be more pleased to announce that Dr. John Bucher will be joining us this coming Thursday April 30 at 5PM. Author of six books including Master of the Cinematic Universe, Storytelling for Virtual Reality, A Best Practice Guide to Sex and Storytelling, and Storytelling by the Numbers, John is a wry, influential, energetic, captivating man – a raconteur in the truest sense of the word with a deep following in the creative sectors of the film, television and production worlds. He is animated, brilliant, and, not surprisingly, funny. At the right age in his own life to take full advantage of both the digital explosion of media development and the tragic conditions created by the pandemic that has driven us all into the sacred spaces of our own homes, John Bucher is a master craftsman of story-making, story-telling and story-construction. Part guide, part psychic traveler, he cooks the elements of Campbell’s hero’s journey until they burst with clarity and precision. The Myth Salon will become a cauldron where he can stir up the perfect storm with tales and techniques. He has written for HBO, DC Comics, and Warner Bros. He currently serves as Content Curator for the Joseph Campbell Foundation and teaches writing and story courses at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center.
The Myth Salon now convenes every other week – for the time being and for the foreseeable future, our time slot is 5-7PM every other Thursday. While the content may be priceless, we serve it up to you free – recorded for playback on Mythosophia.net, varnished only by the layers of mythic interpretation and commentary by our generous panel of educators. High quality content and entertainment with a generous helping of cultural mythology – at a time when we need it most!
